For many people, friendships are the longest-lasting and most fulfilling relationships they have. Friendships, like all connections, require maintenance to thrive. Therapy for friends, such as therapy for individuals, couples and families, also helps to promote healing, resolve conflicts, improve communication skills and achieve growth goals.
Working with a qualified therapist you and your friend(s) may: prevent the weakening of the relationship, build a better understanding of mutual needs, develop better listening skills, facilitate connection and closeness or create space to address concerns.
When a friendship matters to you, working through conflicts and adapting to changing life circumstances can mean the difference between keeping and losing a valuable friendship. Qualified therapist can help you with:
-Unresolved conflict (it’s possible that conflicts could arise in different friendship settings from time to time. Rather than letting them fester, you and your friend could benefit from discussing what happened with an impartial listener who can help you resolve your conflict and restore peace between you).
-Competition (it isn’t unusual for a sense of competition to invade a friendship. Competition can damage friendships and other meaningful alliances. Therapy can help a person to explore what’s underlying the competitiveness and address those issues).
-Unhealthy interactions (toxicity, codependency, one-sidedness)
-Distance (If you feel a growing sense of distance between you and a friend, it could be a natural consequence of geographical changes — or it could be a concern percolating. A therapist can help you create a plan for maintaining closeness across the miles)
-Life changes (people don’t always marry, have children, or start businesses in sync with their friends. If your relationship with a close friend has been strained because you’re in different life phases, you’re not alone. As people get older, family and work obligations often limit the amount of time and energy they have to devote to their friendships.
-Spouse and partner concerns (when spouses and friends don’t get along, a therapist may be able to help you: establish boundaries, express anxieties or a sense of loss
find new ways to support one another)
-Differing social and political views (in recent years, friendships have gone down in flames over ideological differences. In a tense climate, a neutral therapist may be able to help you and someone you love: sort out your differences, learn to talk about contentious subjects respectfully, understand each other’s viewpoints, find ways to love and support one another)

My name is Chelsea Brewer, and I am an Intern Counsellor with U-Matter Counselling & Coaching Services. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Criminology and am currently completing a Master’s in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. Born and raised in North Vancouver, I continue to live and work in the Lower Mainland. For the past several years, I have worked as a Youth & Family Support Worker, supporting youth with diverse needs—including those with ADHD, Autism, and FASD. In this role, I assist youth and their families in navigating challenges, fostering resilience, and helping them thrive. My personal experience with ADHD has also deepened my understanding of the unique strengths and challenges associated with neurodiversity, enriching my empathy and insight as a counsellor. Several years ago, I recovered from a motor vehicle accident that profoundly impacted my life. Through this experience, I found healing with the guidance of a counsellor who supported me through the healing process. This transformative experience inspired my path to becoming a counsellor. I believe that establishing a therapeutic rapport is paramount in the counselling process, and I am committed to walking alongside clients, helping them uncover their innate resilience. When I am not at work, I enjoy immersing myself in the natural beauty the lower mainland has to offer through activities like hiking, skiing, and camping. Additionally, I am a passionate food enthusiast and love exploring new restaurants and culinary experiences. Therapeutic Approach My therapeutic approach is grounded in deep respect for each person’s uniqueness and inherent worth. Through a collaborative and empathetic process, I aim to create a supportive, transformative space where clients can explore their inner world, strengthen relationships, and work toward authenticity, connection, and well-being. My practice draws on Person-Centered Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy, especially in addressing relational and emotional challenges. This allows me to help clients identify and build on their strengths, highlighting past successes and envisioning positive outcomes. I support clients in identifying and articulating their emotions, exploring underlying relational patterns and attachment needs, and developing healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. By facilitating emotional expression, validation, and understanding, I help clients foster greater intimacy, connection, and relational satisfaction, empowering them to create positive, lasting change. During our journey together, we will use an integrative therapeutic approach that is trauma-informed, person-centered, and collaborative, ultimately meeting you where you are at on your healing journey

You do not need to know what to talk about, to come to therapy, or even have a specific problem. Show up, ready to change and grow, and the rest is my job.

I like working with clients who are ready to change, even if they are not sure exactly what they want to change yet. I enjoy helping people define what a “good,” or “better” life would look like for them, and exploring - and, conquering - blocks to achieving this.

Sometimes, this involves going backwards, and exploring past patterns. Other times, it is about moving forward. We define this, together. I welcome all to work with me. As a mixed race (Jamaican/German), BIPOC, queer, and non-binary therapist, I love serving members of my community. I also enjoy helping people overcome blocks to creativity and business. I excel at helping people get “unstuck,” and get meaningful and sustainable results from therapy. I help people identify, and break out of, cycles. Clients may struggle with routine, relationships, mood disorders, focus, getting started, a creative rut, or trauma triggers. I specialize in adult ADHD, but welcome clients from all backgrounds to work with me.

If you think we would sound like a good match, please reach out for a free consult. You can email me, or click the link the link to my booking page, to schedule your free consultation. Looking forward to connecting!
