Fatima’s background is in working with children, youth, and families. She has a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University. Aiming to meet you where you are at in your journey, Fatima recognizes how lived experiences contribute to our actions, behaviours, and how we view the world around us.

Fatima believes that building emotionally safe relationships are vital. She focuses on how attachment styles, culture, and communication impact our relationships. While being slightly comedic, she promises to take a trauma-informed and strength-based approach. She believes in a client-centered approach that is culturally diverse with a holistic perspective. Having experienced culture-clash herself, Fatima recognizes the support needed to find wellness and belonging when incongruence exists in the home.

Fatima’s techniques mirror elements of CBT, DBT, mindfulness, self-reflection, humanistic perspectives, and solution-focused goal setting. Fatima has also received training in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, Mental Health First-Aid, Trauma-Informed Practice, and and Cultural Sensitivity Training. In her spare time, Fatima can be found spending time with her miniature dachshund, Chai, or practicing self-care in nature with a good book.

In addition to flexible scheduling, Fatima is open to in-person and online counselling. She aims to provide a safe and judgement-free space to explore whatever has led you to your counselling experience. If you can’t find a time that works for you please email her at fatima.gulamhusein@yorkvilleu.ca!

My name is Shelley Shumas (she/her), and I am a Practicum Student Counsellor working towards completing my Master of Counselling at City University of Seattle and becoming a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). My approach to counselling is relational and trauma-informed, integrating elements of person-centred therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), family systems, and neuroscience-informed approaches. As an intern counsellor, my role is to support clients on their journey of self-discovery, helping to uncover inner parts and patterns and meeting them with empathy and compassion for doing the best they can. I welcome and support individuals, couples, youth, and families from all backgrounds, identities, and experiences. Everyone deserves care that feels safe, respectful, and affirming, regardless of one’s race, class, ethnicity, gender, age, sexuality, or background. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and bring over 20 years of experience working with diverse populations across health and fitness, mental health, and academic and employment counselling. Currently, I am offering individual counselling under supervision, which allows me to provide quality support while continuing to grow in clinical practice. This means I receive regular guidance and feedback from an experienced clinician to ensure the best possible care for my clients.
